If you can afford it, go to a really good hair stylist (one that specializes in ethnic hair) every single week for about 8 months. This will start to train your hair and it will become noticeably more manageable. This will work whether you decide to go natural or continue perming your hair. Stay away from home perms and make sure that if you are using blow dryers or hot curlers that the heat level is relatively low. A stylist will be able to recommend some good hair products to help reduce the breakage and maximize moisture retention.

You should embrace the natural beauty of being an African-American woman. Why do you feel your hair has to be straight? The answer is much deeper than hair, it is about how you see your African-American heritage and all the things that is encumbent of being a member of that race.

Try cutting it... but not too short. It could be that the ends are dead. Also, there's a lot of products you could use. There's Citrus-Shine, a de-frizzer. That works wonders on my hair. You could also try a hot-oil treatment. About the shedding... comb it only with a pick. An actual brush or comb could be doing some serious damage, depending on how fragile your hair is.

Go to your local Beauty-Supply store and ask someone who works there, they usually know what to do.

Good luck. :)

You need to have it done by a professional. Look in the yellow pages as soon as possible. Let them get your hair into good condition. Once you learn how to deal with your hair, then you can go the stylist for maintenance. Ask people that you know where they get their hair done. Just be sure that the person that does your hair is licensed.

"Shedding" is normal in SMALL amounts. This can also be because your hair has been over processed by chemicals, color, etc. When relaxing are you using the right strengh of relaxer? It is important to only relax new growth(roots)when doing touch ups and always using a nutrilizing shampoo to stop the process. When pressing your hair it is very important to moisturize the hair from root to end with a good pressing oil. This will help protect the hair from the high temperatures used while pressing. Make sure to section off your hair doing small sections at a time. Use the back of the comb (with no teeth)and slowly pressing firmly from root to end then going back doing the same to the under side. If done correctly your hair should stay smooth till your next washing. My advice would be to see a stylists for your chemical processes. Meantime you should get a trim, pick up a good deep conditioner and treat your hair at least twice a week with it.

May I suggest braids? From your comments about your hair only lasting an hr after you hot comb it suggest that you may live in a humid enviorment. When you say that perms dont work, what do you mean? Do they not get your hair as straight as you want it? Are u applying perms and hot combing your own hair and if so, how taught you how?

Your hair may be shedding after u hot comb it because your hot comb is too hot an you are actually burning off your hair. It is very important to use a heat protectant on your hair before you start to hot comb it and not load it down with grease because if you do, you are essentially frying it.

It sounds as if your hair is not properly conditoned which weather you get a perm, wet set or a press and curl, your hair will look like crap no matter what you do if it is in poor condition. My first suggestion is to deep condition your hair over night. A good deep conditioner is hair mayonaise. If you or short on funds, reg mayo works well also. Put it on your hair, put on a plastic shower cap, wrap it in a scarf and go to sleep. The heat from your scalp will help open the cuticle layer of your hair and allow the conditioner to penetrate the hair shaft.

Then, the next morning, wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo *dove intense moisture is a good one and u can get it at wal-mart* after washing, condition it again with a nice heavy conditioner with protien and oil *once again dove intense moisture is good too* After you rinse out your conditioner, and towel dry your hair, use a leave in conditioner *911, infusium and parnevu cream are good ones* After applying the leave in conditioner, spray your hair with oil sheen and blow dry it with a blow drier that has a comb attachment. Make sure that hair is COMPLETLEY dry before attempting to hot comb it.

Drying the hair with this kind of drier gets the hair a bit straighter so that you dont have to work so hard hot combing it.

Now after your hair is dry, plug in your hot comb. Apply heat protectant to your hair and then part it in 4 different sections and clip all but one section down. You want to press your hair one section at a time.

If it has a temp setting try it on the middle one first. If it doesnt straighten your hair easily, then turn it up one notch until it is.

Starting with the first lose section of hair, take your comb and part out one row like you were going to make a braid or oil your scalp. Comb it through with the regular comb to make sure u have gotten out the kinks you can. With the teeth of the hot comb facing your scalp, start at the root of the section and slowly drag the comb through the section of hair, pulling tautly on the hair like you would if you were ironing a shirt. Drag the hot comb all the way to the end of the hair section and repeat until it is the smoothness you want. Repeat steps until your whole head is done. Then spray with oil sheen.

You should only be washing your hair once a week TOPS. You also shouldnt hot comb it every day and wrap it up at night to maintain the straightness. Make sure u use oil sheen every day
