I'm not entirely sure. Perhaps the hair is thicker to allow African American people to have better resistance to the sun? The same way African Americans have darker skin complexions to absorb more of the suns intense rays.

AA hair is thicker because it is extremely curly. Their are a lot of tiny curls packed together. Even when hair is straightened, it is still extremely thick
