My son is african american with very curly (not kinky at all) hair. How do I start dreadlocks for hi

You should really go to a professional to start the dreads. If he is african american, he has some kink to his hair and the hair will eventually lock. Dreadlocks are not gross if they are maintained. We're not talking about the homeless type dreadlocks, which DO stink. If they are maintained properly, he'll be fine. I would suggest watching the stylist - you may be able to maintain them yourself after a few visits of watching them style them. By the way, one disadvantage that you MUST mention to your son is that when he gets tired of them, he has to start fresh with a low cut, since once the hair is locked, it is locked.

You can start them with the two strand twists or with gel twists depending on his hair type. The gel twists might be better if he has curly hair because they will hold better.

Since his hair is already curly, there are several methods. Like a previous posted stated, you can start off with twists. Another method is backcombing. Personally I think dreads are gross is when folks with "straight" hair adds all kinds of garbage to start locks. Sorry kids but you are better off getting done by a pro. No use smelling like untreated sewer. Unlike them, your son can shampoo his hair as normal, just skip the creamy based shampoos. In fact just get the Jamaica Mango N' Lime hair care line and he should be good to go. There are several websites that have good info on how to start and maintain locks. Just use google it.
