Black African-American Girls' Hair----- Hair Care Question?

What are some basic hair care tips for washing and styling for black little girls? How often do you have to wash it, and what type of product is safe for kids? Do you have to relax it to style or braid it? Or, can you just braid it with the natural curl?

Thanks!

I think once a week is good to wash the hair. After you wash it you should comb it out into four sections (two on the side, Two in the back braided) Go throuh each section part and lightly grease (with hair grease) after you braid each section rebraid it after you have finished a blow dryer with a comb attatchment is what you should use to dry it. Just undo each section one at a time blow dry it and after your done style how ever. They have childrens shampoo at the store make sure you use conditioner and don't use gel. If the hair is not straight enough you can flat iorn. You do not always have to do a relaxer see how managable the hair is afer you wash and blow dry or flat iorn and make your decision. Good luck! If worse comes to worse take them to the beauty shop.

Really it just depends on the child. Its recommended you wash every week to 2 weeks. I wouldn't relax her hair unless you have to, once you start relaxing, you have to keep it up. You could have it braided, but rotate between braiding and natural styles or her hair will break off. Since her hair is naturally curly, you can easily go between braiding and losse styles. As afar as products go, its touch and go since no one person hair responds the same. I recommend "just for me" products or pantene products for women of color. Do make sure she goes to the hairdresser regularly for trimming.

Take the kid to the beauty shop! I wash my hair once a week... I would not perm my hair before I get it braided, but some people do..I have short hair and I perm it too often. I wont tell you how much because you would make that kid lose all her hair..if you did it that often. Go to the black side of town and go to the beauty college if you are short on money.

I wash my hair once a week, and with a child, you may want to do twice a week. You can style it naturally, by having her hair in a puff ball on the top, just brush it into a pony tail. You don't need to relax it because it's not really that hard to keep up. You can braid it with the natural curl too. Any product is fine, as long as it doesn't have too harsh of chemicals, use the same shampoo you use on your hair.

For a braid you can comb down the middle of the scalp and grease it, also grease all of the scalp and the hair too, that way it won't be dry. Then plait it up on both sides and then put a hair bow on the end.

Growing up, my mom washed my hair once a week and moisturized it with Luster's Pink Oil or something like it. Today, I would say Kemi Oyl is a better choice because it's lighter (and it smells better). As far as styling goes, I would strongly advise advise you to leave the child's hair in it's natural state. You're only going to damage her hair by relaxing it and she's too young to handle hair in a fragile, chemically-altered state. You don't sound like you'd be very confident in dealing with relaxed hair either.

With her natural hair, you have the option to comb it out and plait it several days a week or braid/twist it in ways that last for two weeks at a time. Either way, use a large toothed comb, start from the bottom of the strand of hair and work your way up to the roots. Brush the hair with a natural/boar bristle brush to distribute oil and make sure you don't just put oil on the hair, but oil the scalp too! You can make small braids or comb twists or two-strand twists that will last for about two weeks. All of these styles are going to start with damp hair; you don't need to blow dry it unless you're going to press it. As long as you don't use any hair extensions, styling should be a simple operation taking about 3 hours (plaiting probably takes 20 mins.).
