Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good"

Id hope we will. Its' not just "good" and "bad"...its' who is more attractive. Then we have the ever present "light skinned-dark skinned" battle between African Americans. It will end when we grow out of our ignorance........

I was reading some of the comments. I dnt think the people on here exactly understand where you are coming from. The hair is not the issue, its what it represents. The "good hair bad hair" complex originated in slave times. When mulattos(mixed people) first came into existence, they were considered better and more attractive. Believe it or not, this problem rears its ugly head even today!

how the heck is that 'slave mentality?'

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

30 years ago I would have said yes. I have come to the conclusion that they never will as long as they think that guilty feeling white swill give them a handout instead of a handup.

Not until you teach your children different.

Long kinky hair is pretty. They look ridiculous when they straighten their hair.

If You had that kinky hair, would you say it was GOOD?

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

Why is that a 'slave mentality' thing? It's just easier to work with straighter hair. There ARE styles that work for kinky hair though. It just depends on how you want to style your hair.

Look at the 60's for God sake. White people were trying to create 'fro's. I hardly think it was a slave mentality that drove them to do that.

well it's kinda true fo mst people. but you cain't judge someones mentality

White people straighten their hair, too.

I understand what you're trying to ask. But every black person that straightens their hair isn't trying to put down their natural hair/race/trying to be white or whatever. Even though I plan on going all natural and have grown out most of my perm, I straightened my hair all my life because it made it easier to manage plus I loved the styles I could wear my hair in while it was straight. Get over it and worry about more important issues than hair.

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

one of the main things holding them back from natural hair is the fact that its harder to get a job, au naturale

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

some African American come to accept it..but its really just pop culture

i hope so.....my daughter is mixed and i love her hair the way it is.....i wouldn't ever want to straightent it...and everybody always says how pretty it is curly....i hope she can learn to love it the way it is....

First, you are clearly not African American since we choose not to use the word "slave" to compare our mentality or anything else. And since you are not, why do you care? Did you just want to throw it out there? Well, its there. Now get a life.

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

I don't think this is slave mentality. That sounds somewhat racist to me. A lot of African Americans are opting to have their hair natural and are liking it.

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

that's not slave mentality, that's marketing strategy in action

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

Maybe straighter hair is just easier to maintain, African Americans aren't the only ones with kinky hair ya know?

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

I don't know......most likely they won't because most of them still think light skin is better than dark skin too. It's a sad neverending story unfortunately.

If it helps at all, I love my kinky locks :-)

I wish you had asked that a different way. It sounds more like an insult than a question meant to help.

Many do get past the psychology of the historic abuse, and go on to embrace their beauty. I work for the most incredible African-American man who is empowering to all.

But, I have been socially rejected recently by someone who hasn't. It hurt. I respect her for who she is and she can't hear it. Very sad because I think she is beautiful and fascinating.

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

Not everyone thinks that. I know I'm happy with myself

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

What are you talking about? Who thinks this?

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

ummmm what?

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

Who cares. I'm mean really. why does everything have to be about blacks? you there other colored people in this country that have been in slaved. the blacks think they are the only people who went through slavery. so again who cares about their "slave mentality." they are not the only ones.

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

I often wondered about that too. I always assumed though that the whole "good" hair and "bad" hair was more about manageability though. One of my friends growing up had kinky hair and her sister had straight hair. I often sat next to her on the floor while her mom did their hair and would comment about how her sister had "good" hair and she had "bad" hair. I assumed it was because the straight hair was easier to deal with, not specifically that it looked better.

Of course, this is coming from a whiteish girl who is fairly naive about such things. Personally, I like the look of natural hair. It's certainly more healthy. Hell, I only learned last year that for black folks, a perm takes the curl out.

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

I'm white with naturally bright wavy red hair and I straighten it. If I don't my hair looks really bad. Who cares if someone straightens their hair? My hair NEVER looks good natural it is just poofy and I hate it.

Will African Americans ever get rid of the slave mentality that straighter hair is "good" and kinky is "bad"?

What the hell do you mean. I'm African American, I'm from Mississippi, I love Kinky hair, and I am proud to be a Slave descendent.

Hey Sunshine,

How kinky is bad? A lot of people don't get hot and bothered under the pressing and curling iron these days...BUT, there are websites THAT CAN TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT.
