How should I do my African American daughter hair for school I CAN'T DO HAIR?

She's going the 3rd grade and I can't do hair. She needs a perm which I can't do! What cute hairstyle can I give her for school? I can't braid. She wants her hair flat ironed like mine but her hair is to thick I can't DO IT!

Hi There, if I can first make a recommendation, please, do NOT get her a perm/relaxer. It will open up a whole new can of difficulties for you and your little one, and weaken the strength of her natural hair.

I'm black, and I flat iron my hair once a week after washing and air drying it, because I prefer to wear it straight. When I don't my hair is super curly, kind of like the singer Mya, but NEVER dry or poofy, anymore.

Two years ago, I got tired of using the "greases" and oils being sold for black hair on the market and stopped using them. After that, I started a company of natural products especially for black and biracial hair called Humble. I saw too much need, too much hype (even among the natural companies), and too many promises that didn't deliver.

My bf is white and uses it on her daughters' hair, one like mine, the other has thick, curly, and coarse hair. When she flat irons it with Humble, their hair is straight, non-poofy, and has gorgeous shine. I've got the before and afters.

I apologize for sounding like an advertisement, but it does work. I have talked to social/case workers, work with an adoption agency, and work with parents who didn't know what to do with their children's black hair. It is challenging, but you CAN do it, with some help.

Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to see pics of some of the children whose parents use Humble. The site should be up Sept. 15, if you'd care to wait until then to see the pics, however.

I wish you all the best.

You have to flat iron her hair in layers if its thick. My hair is thick and it has to be done in layers otherwise it will not work.

I would advise that you take her to your local African American salon because I have thick hair and unmanagable hair and I go to the salon and it looks fin if you wrap it at night...just take her to a salon or tell her you can't do her hair like yours hey she's only going to third grade. Or you could either go to the store and get motions products which works fo ethnic hair and it's pretty good so at least you canmanage her hair

If you don't have time to find someone--which I'm sure you could do--friends..anyone-lol. I would just put in in a high ponytail and let it fro--I think that looks cute. Or fro'd with a nice headband. kinda a retro look. good luck

Please do not relax that baby's hair. Because you would really have to make sure that you keep her hair moisturized. Just find someone that can braid it down. Not only is it convenient it is also good for the hair.
