Why do African-Americans get weaves instead of letting their own hair grow out?

As an African American woman I think I can answer this question with first hand knowledge and experience.

First, not ALL African Americans "get weaves".

Secondly, women of all colors "get weaves" and/or wear hair pieces. Furthermore, it's more so for fashion rather than for lack of wanting to grow their own hair. However for some, perhaps this is the case, but I would generalize a whole group of people.

I am 27 years of age, and have always had long healthy hair, and have never worn or desired to wear weave.

And in response to the previous poster. African American hair is not brittle. Normally brittle hair comes from malnutrition and/or lack of hair care maintenance.

African American hair is NOT oily, which is why we dont HAVE to wash our hair on a daily basis. Being that our hair does not create an abundance of oil, we have to be sure to oil our hair, or our hair will not grow, or will not be healthy.

ALL HAIR can be healthy if we treat it well, just as we do our bodies.

Respect,

S

i think there hair is very brittle and not as healthy looking so they use weve to look better. i have friends who are african american and they say their hair is brittle...i guess they are too lazy to treat it well...sorry. and i never mentioned oily...

We didn't invent weaves you folks [Europeans] did. They were putting extensions in their hair long before the Koreans started bringing their horse-hair to the US. I like it. If done correctly it looks beautiful on African American women.

For the same reason white women get weaves.... often times its just for a change of look but unfortuneatly other times its because society has this picture of what beautiful is and unfortuneatly it seems that definition includes long flowy hair.. i personally feel fake hair (and weaves), fake nails, and hair dye are all a joke. Sure people use these to once in a while pamper themselves and feel pretty but when it gets to the point where its a routine you HAVE to stay upon to feel pretty and feminine, its pathetic.
